Pretty much all TVs only have LF/RF speakers and a lot of people are happy with that. I doubt that your average (non-audiophile) consumer is not going to complain that dialog is not very good off axis. Don't forget that having a center speaker is important when entertaining guests who are not seated in the middle between the Left and Right speakers. It's not that I think the center isn't important -- most movie's have most of the sound coming out of the center -- just that it can be done with out with a properly set up left/right.

The early Czech sound film era was productive, above all in mainstream genres, with the comedies of Martin Frič or Karel Lamač. It doesn't sound bad but it could vary with different equipment. One of those things where there is no real standard on how to do it. So i could turn the rear speakers down, and have most the sound coming from L/R/C, or turn rear and center down. Which is just retarded when i can hit 2.1 and when i go back to 5.1 for movies or tv i dont have to re adjust. My old AVR was a tape-measure-and-listen set-up - all manual.
